Christmas 2009 in Bern, Switzerland

December 24th, 2009.

We arrived in Zurich. Cold. Nothing was open. We drove to the city of Bern (Berne) where we would stay for 2 nights and meet our friends Vanessa and Christof. As we checked our email, we learned that there has been a change of plan. Our friends could not meet us on Christmas' Eve (the reason we flew from California to Switzerland). Our hotel is about 15 minutes walk to the old city of Bern, but was too cold, so we drove to it on Christmas morning and cross the bridge over the acclaimed "clean for drink" river. While it was hard to find a restaurant that's open (because of holidays), we were surpised to see that our hotel restaurant's was open for Christmas Dinner and some local families who apparently didn't like to cook, had come here to eat.

In the afternoon our friends met us at the hotel, and we drove to their apartment on the hill above the old city. Vanessa, and her husband, Christof. I had not seen Vanessa, my Costa Rican friend for almost 15 years. She still looked beautiful like she always was, but more mature and sophisticated. Still wears that gorgeous big smile. The four of us spent a couple of hours in the old town, then did some shopping at a supermarket and picked up some fondue to be cooked and enjoyed at their apartment. It was a very pleasant evening, catching up over fondue. What a lovely visit !
